ABOUT ME

About Philip Colley

I have spent over 30 years in the travel and leisure industries, running my own businesses for much of that time. I have travelled widely, particularly in the Far and Middle East, and am multilingual having studied some 8 languages, the latest and most difficult by far being Welsh.

I have been a supporter of justice for Palestine since my first encounter with Palestinian refugees in Syria in 1983, more actively so in recent years. I also have a longstanding connection with Ukraine and am opposed to both the proxy war being waged there by NATO as well as the misinformation and historical distortion that underpins it.

Today, I work in the tourism industry in East Sussex and act as the literary executor for the estate of my great uncle Gareth Jones, the famous Welsh investigative journalist, who in 1933 exposed the Great Soviet Famine. Most of my adult life, I have been a close observer of politics and active from time to time in campaigning.

However, from what we are now witnessing it is clear the British establishment is rotten to the core. This has been brought into sharp focus by the genocide now being carried out in Gaza – given moral, practical and political backing by this Conservative government, supported by Labour and almost the entire political establishment, as well as the mainstream media.

The complicity of the British political class in what the IJC has deemed a plausible genocide is an indelible, unforgiveable and dark stain upon our national story but much of the population they represent have not been fooled by their dissembling. This is evidenced by the unprecedented mass movement that has mobilized for a ceasefire over 8 months, regularly seeing marches of hundreds of thousands. As somebody with friends in Gaza, I feel this tragedy with particular acuteness. It is clear to most of us that we need radical and meaningful change and I am determined to do whatever I can to make that happen.

As a socialist the corruption that pervades our society appears to me to be at its most glaring in the Labour Party. With Starmer’s almost total purging of the party’s left, our country has been robbed of an alternative to decades of Tory misrule, corruption and cronyism. I believe the Workers Party represents the only true socialist alternative and that’s why I am standing as their candidate for Hastings & Rye. Within our constituency there are multiple issues that need to be urgently addressed including childhood poverty, barely inhabitable public housing and inadequate educational opportunities, not to mention the appalling state of our roads.

As someone whose business involves hosting tourists to our beautiful seaside resort I am also particularly concerned by the issue of illegal sewage release into our waterways. It has been obvious for a long time the only solution to the chronic greed and mismanagement of this privatized monopoly is nationalization of the water industry, something the Workers Party supports but which both main parties are opposed to. Finally, lest we forget, there are tens of thousands of young Ukrainian and Russian men dying in an unnecessary war whose origin ultimately lies with NATO’s aggressive and ill-judged expansionism.

Ukraine has been part of my family’s story since 1889 and with this knowledge and experience I hope to raise awareness about the real, underlying issues that have brought us to this point. The British public is being lied to, and further impoverished, in the interests of warmongers whose escalation of violence threatens to lead us down the path to apocalypse. Instead of using common sense to secure peace our so-called leaders are doubling down on disaster.

We must not ignore or underestimate the extreme existential peril that this places us all in. I bring to this election in-depth insights into world history and a fresh perspective on current events and aim to run a campaign guided by the principles of truth, justice, fairness and compassion.

Why vote for Workers Party?

Why vote WPB in Hastings and Rye?

“A calm head in a crisis, Phil is a person of huge experience and great integrity. He would be a credit to our constituency.”

Tom

“Phil Colley is one of the most honest and well-informed people I know. When it comes to his knowledge of world affairs he has a level of insight and understanding that eludes most politicians. In this time of instability I believe Phil’s grasp of these vital matters will prove a great asset to our parliamentary decision making and discourse.”

WHY VOTE FOR OUR PARTY?

Our Key Policies

Decent, Affordable Social Housing

Social Housing was something this country pioneered back in the day. We want to return to this, but with a modern twist, to provide affordable, cost-effective housing produced for people to live in, but using automation to meet the high demand for housing due to a failed free-market system.

Nationalise the NHS

The NHS has been broken into a million pieces — all of them private. It’s time to return the NHS back into public hands, do away with all of the expensive and convoluted market systems within it, and turn it back into a system which is responsive to the people, and for which, parliament is responsible. No more highly-expensive and useless PFI contracts.

Community-led Redevelopment

We will deliver mass-produced housing which will be affordable, and will provide families with homes of good quality. This will be done not by wasteful investment projects or private firms, but with automation and community-led building plans so that what gets developed in a community is what the community want, not what multi-national corporations want.

Bring in Children’s Online Wellbeing Act

We want to protect our children from addictive social media that leads to mental health, lack of confidence and self-harm issues. We want to limit enhanced content and all advertising to under-18s. That means taking on big Social Media companies in the Parliament to protect our future.

None of the mainstream parties would dare take on big corporate social media companies. This reason alone should be enough for you to vote for an independent party this election.

Stop the Genocide in Gaza

We are not afraid to call it what it is – Genocide! Most people agree with us, but the mainstream parties are simply ignoring the people. Make your vote Count! We do, by also supporting students!

Starmer’s Labour stands for relative reticence to criticise Israel. He said they have the right to cut off all water, food and electricity. He has never condemned any of the bombing of refugee camps killing hundreds at a time. That is unforgivable.

Reduce Bills – Nationalise the Utilities

Water and the Rail sectors are the prime examples of disastrous privatisation by Labour and the Tories. We stand for nationalising the utilities.

Labour – a supposedly left-wing party, can’t even name 3 industries they would nationalise.
